Travel Dream - Winter 2014/15 - page 19

The Lake Tahoe region is the perfect base for visitors looking for
outdoor adventure. A ski paradise in winter and a hiking and nature
lover's destination the rest of the year. The Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe is
the premier resort in the region and offers distinctive service, great
food and large rooms with wonderful views of the surrounding
mountains and valleys. Most of the rooms have their own fireplaces
and balconies. The nearby village of Northstar can be reached by
gondola and is packed with restaurants, bars and shopping.

The Ahwahnee Lodge is in the heart of the
Yosemite National Park, in an area that was once
the village of the native Miwoks. In 1925, Gilbert
Stanley Underwood was selected as the architect
for this new luxury hotel. Due to its remote
location, the construction of The Ahwahnee was
the most complex trucking endeavour of its day.
More than 5,000 tons of stone, 1,000 tons of steel,
and 30,000 feet of timber were hauled over the
challenging mountain roads.
The hotel is renowned for its grand public areas
with large stone fireplaces, vast wooden beams,
rich tapestries and elegant stained glass. The views
of the Half Dome and the Yosemite Falls are
exceptional. The hotel features a fantastic solarium
with indoor fountain from which to view the
majestic Glacier Point.

The jewel in Northern California’s
natural crown is without doubt,
Yosemite National Park. Sights like
the daunting sheer face of El

Point and the 200 giant Sequoia

incredible pioneering work that saw
the protection of Yosemite Valley
